Unit Reports

On losing the game after having had a 2-0, 4-0 lead:
"The first two sets we won pretty easily and I think we thought it was a little bit too easy. Maybe we felt that ’oh, it can be final’, and then we stopped playing and being active, we stopped to move. They played better in the end and we didn’t push each other to really come back to win."
On whether the opponents' got a mental advantage having come back from a 2-0, 4-0 deficit:
"Of course. If you’re 2-0, 4-0 down and have a time out and it directly changes everything, of course this pushed them up. Our reaction was quite bad.
"We were 2-0, 4-0 up and then you have the pressure to win. We were also quite confident that we would win and this was maybe our biggest error. We should’ve gone a bit more motivated than normally and not just continued the line and this was our biggest mistake. We also didn’t take a time out when they came back from 4-0 to 4-0 (in the third game).
"At the end of the day we want to win and this is the worst way to play a match. You have to learn from it and next time make it better."

On winning bronze:
"We are happy about the bronze medal, this is no question. Not only because of this bronze medal but because we beat the two pairs – we beat the champions, we beat (Simon) Gauzy (FRA), who is one of the best in Europe, and (Prithika) Pavade (FRA) is I think the biggest future (star) from Europe. She played amazing table tennis. They’re a very good mixed double (pair), they had very good results already, we are just a new pair and we can be happy and proud of the tournament.
"If we could get our higher level a bit more stabile, then maybe it could be quite, quite good results in the future."
On reaching the gold medal match after coming back from a 2-0, 4-0 deficit:
"We are unbelievably happy because our goal was to be in the final and to reach the gold medal. We are really happy that we came back from 2-0, 4-0. I believed in him (mixed doubles partner Ovidiu Ionescu, ROU), that he would play his best game after 2-0, 4-0. I also played very well from the beginning and I stayed focused. I am just very happy that we won and now I don’t want to stop here. I want the gold medal."

On the gold medal match opponents, Emmanuel Lebesson (FRA) and Jianan Yuan (FRA):
"We never played against them, it will be the first time we will play. Now it is 50/50 because they don’t know us. We have to play our best and fight from the beginning until the end, like in the semifinal."
On how they turned the match around, having been down 2-0, 4-0 in the third game:
"I’d never practised on this table so I struggled a little bit, until the third set I couldn’t find my rhythm.
"’Berni’ (mixed doubles partner Bernadette Szőcs, ROU) – managed to play fantastically all the match, to bring me back. I started to get more and more confident for each ball and in the end we just won. I don’t know how it happened but it’s just an amazing feeling."

On what they told each other in the time out in the third game:
"The coach said ’Ovi, take the risks, because with no risks there’s no gain’. It’s better to lose on our hand than the opponents’, so we just said we’d go for the balls and hopefully we will come back. ’Berni’ was already in the match and I was a little bit on the side but we managed to go through."

On when the momentum changed:
"At 2-0, 4-4 I felt the momentum changed. I felt that we knew where the balls were coming and we felt the rhythm of their balls and they were struggling a lot more than us. In the end, at 10-6, there was a lot of emotions also, but I’m happy. I think she (Szőcs) did the last point. I didn’t have to finish the match so it was nice."

On the confidence the comeback brings coming into the gold medal match:
"You practise all your life for such matches. To turn around in a semifinal of the European championships is amazing. Actually, for me it also happened when I took a medal in the singles (at the 2018 European championships) – I was 2-2, 10-4 down in the quarterfinal and then somehow (won). When you go for the gold medal you need to suffer a lot. In this we suffered a lot and hopefully in the gold medal match it will not be the same, but we are ready for everything."
