On losing the semifinal to compatriots Mattias Falck (SWE) and Kristian Karlsson (SWE): |
---|
"It feels tough when you just lost. Of course we play the world champions and two good pals but at the same time it feels pretty tough right now. I think we’re doing a pretty decent match but I miss too much. He (doubles partner Anton Källberg, SWE) says that he misses a lot but I think that he was the much better of us two. "We have our chances and lead 1-1, 8-6, so we’ve got some chances there. In the last set we are also leading 8-6, so we have the chances but we don’t capitalise on them. They are a little tighter than us there perhaps." On what was decisive in the match: "We do a few too many easy mistakes whereas they are a little more stabile. Sometimes we try to play on a slightly different level than we need to. We can follow each other up in different ways but we make too many easy mistakes at the same time as they are doing many good things, we shouldn’t forget that." On Falck and Karlsson: "They’re the best in the world so it is tough to meet them. "They’ve played together for 10 years so they know what happens when they do things. They are closely-knit together and then they simply are an insanely good doubles pair, there’s not much more to say about that. Then we make a few mistakes that they don’t do and that’s probably where the biggest difference is today." On the difference between an experienced pair and him and Källberg, who have hardly played together for the past two years: "Sometimes you perhaps say how you’re going to play but then you change your mind and do something different and it goes completely wrong. They know their style of play and what will happen in any given moment. We have to do something to disturb their rhythm so we play a little more difficult, perhaps a little more difficult than we need to." On his and Källberg's doubles tournament: "Our doubles tournament has really gone up and down like a rollercoaster throughout the whole tournament, we have gone from playing amazing sets to hardly touching the ball, it feels like. If we had played a little more before perhaps we would’ve known each other a bit better. I haven’t played doubles for about two years, so it’s different. But now we have made it to a semifinal after all, we can’t stand here and say that we are bad either. " |
On what makes the difference between him and Jon Persson (SWE) and their opponents: |
"They play a little more stabile and simple whereas we have to try to come up with some different things to try to disturb their rhythm. It’s up to us whether we can manage that or not, it creates a new difficulty level. "We were a little too bad when we got the opportunities." On winning his first international senior medal: "It is my first so of course I am happy for that. But we were happy for that yesterday (Wednesday) when we secured it. Now it is tough that it only became a bronze when we’d been hoping and aiming for more. But I am very happy." |
On his communication with doubles partner Mattias Falck (SWE) during the match: |
”You talk a lot to each other during a doubles match and now it’s probably even more because we don’t have a coach with us. In doubles it’s all about being as good as possible in the first balls and I think we did that very well throughout the whole match.” On how to claim their first European championships doubles title: ”If we keep playing as well as we’ve done this tournament we’ve got a good chance. Then it’s a lot about me being able to reach with my forehand. That has been a good concept so far and when Mattias plays so well with the short balls, I need to be aggressive enough on the balls I get served from him.” On whether they’ve got a revenge to take out on final opponents Robert Gardos (AUT) and Daniel Habesohn (AUT), who beat them in the 2012 and 2018 European championships doubles finals: ”I think that it is hard to say it like that because it’s such a long time since those finals. We can’t play like we did in 2018, we’ve got much better, both of us. ”It is a little bit like at the (2021) world championships; if play as well as we’ve done this tournament and reach that level and someone beat us, well congrats to them, well done. We will need to reach that level and then we’ll look back at this and be happy no matter the result.” |
On beating Jon Persson (SWE) and Anton Källberg (SWE) 3-1: |
"They’ve done a fantastic tournament and were playing really well. I think the big difference is that we do it really well in the end of the third and fourth game. We tighten our play and manage to get a good quality in the end of the sets, we get a bit more aggressive and get better returns and that was probably making the small difference today." On playing their teammates and friends in a European championships semifinal: ”It would’ve been more fun to be on one half (of the tournament brackets) each so that we could’ve played each other in a final, so of course it’s a bit special. ”At the same time it’s good for Swedish table tennis that we show our best side and have both pairs in the semifinal. Of course it is a special game to play this far into a tournament.” On final opponents Robert Gardos (AUT) and Daniel Habesohn (AUT): ”It’s a good pair, of course. It’s something that we’ve been aiming for the whole tournament so we obviously look forward to this game. We hope we can do an incredibly good match, hopefully our best match of the tournament.” On whether it is special to play Gardos and Habesohn, who have beaten them in their two previous European championships doubles finals, in 2012 and 2018: ”No. It’s a good pair so it’s not that surprising that they’ve reached the final.” |
