Unit Reports

On beating Sabine Winter (GER) 4-3 in the semifinal:
”It’s very emotional. I still can’t believe that I’m in the final after such a close game. At 3-1, 4-0 I thought that I could be in the final and this was a big mistake because I got passive and thought that she would make mistake but she didn’t, this was a mistake by me.
”I’m just happy that I didn’t give up and that I continued to play how I can play. In the end there were just two points difference. Both deserved the win today but this is sport and today I was maybe more lucky.”

On winning the deciding points in the last set as the sold-out Rudi-Sedlmayer-Halle cheered for Winter:
”I was so concentrated, I just talked to myself ’come on, be on the table, be on the table, be aggressive, every time’. When I won the point I told myself ’come on, keep it going, keep it going, don’t be passive’, and I think this was the key.
”I didn’t even scream or do something, I was so focused to not losing concentration, to keep going and keep playing.”

On the tears in her eyes after the match:
”I thought about my father, because my father passed away in 2015 and he was my coach. When I play big tournaments I always think about him and today he gave me strength in the game to continue playing.”

On her friendship with Winter:
”It’s a very good relationship. It was a very nice match and even if I would’ve lost I would have been sad but we are very good friends, she was bridesmaid at my wedding and she was also in Linz (Austria, where Polcanova lives) a couple of times and I was in Düsseldorf (Germany, where Winter lives) and we understand each other very well.”

On the loud crowd:
"I knew that the crowd would support her and that the tribunes would be full. I knew already a long time ago that in Germany there are always a lot of people who support table tennis and I just try to stay concentrated.
"I find it very nice that people supported Sabine, but the feeling in the hall was also amazing. It’s nice to play before such a big crowd. Table tennis is not like football or other very popular sports, so it’s very nice."

On her feelings:
"I am just so tired again. This was my 14th match in one week."
On losing 4-3 to Sofia Polcanova (AUT) after 12-10 in the deciding set:
"That’s table tennis. Sometimes you win close, as I did in the round of 32, sometimes you lose close. I still enjoyed this match and I still keep this tournament as a good memory even though it’s sad that I can’t have another match in front of this crowd tomorrow (Sunday).
"I’m still somehow not sad that I lost this close because it was fun to play and I’ve never had that many people cheering for me and I gave it my very best and I think it was a good match and I can’t do more than try everything."

On men's singles defending champion Timo Boll (GER) saying he did not feel very sad as he was eliminated by a 4-0 defeat:
"For me, it’s a lot nicer that I had a very close match that could’ve also turned out to me than losing 4-0, because if I’d lost 4-0 without a chance it would not have been as good of an atmosphere as this.
"The hall was really loud, they were cheering for me, everyone was believing that maybe I could still turn this match around and this is a totally different feeling. I am happy and thankful that I got this experience, so I’m happy that I lost very close and not without a chance."

On whether she felt the nerves playing in front of a full Rudi-Sedlmayer-Halle:
"I think at 10-10 maybe I did the wrong serve. She then played a ball that was not my favourite ball. Sometimes I played it on the table but this was a ball that I made few mistakes on.
"I cannot say that it was only the nerves – of course I could’ve also played on the table. At 8-10 I was fine, I managed to get to 10-10, I think sometimes very small things decide in table tennis."

On whether her defeat was down to bad luck:
"Sometimes the other one just has a little more luck than the other one. I cannot say ’I was so unlucky here’ because in the round of 32 I somehow turned the match to win very closely.
"Of course it was fighting spirit but you also need a little bit of luck for it to be possible. In one match I had more luck than the opponent, in this match maybe I didn’t quite have the luck, but I was also just unlucky, it was just two points that was the difference and that was fine."
