Unit Reports

On losing first game but winning 4-1:
"It was important for me to start well in the second set because in the first set he was surprising me a little bit with his serves. I knew I needed a good start in the second set to calm him down and to put me a little bit on top.
"From this time on I felt very good and aggressive and safe. In the last set, when he was leading, I also felt that I could always come back and play my good shots and that’s why I’m very relieved."

On the atmosphere at the Rudi-Sedlmayer-Halle:
"It’s amazing. I heard that tomorrow (Saturday) is sold out but today it also feels like it is almost sold out already. We didn’t have a big competition in Germany for a long time and I think the hall is perfect. It’s quite tight and the atmosphere is quite loud, it’s definitely helping us German."

On whether it also adds pressure:
"Of course, you also want to perform in front of your home crowd. But if you take the right momentum and the right feeling like we Germans have done in the singles event so far, I think it’s definitely pushing."

On having become a father to a son, Tyler, last Friday:
"The feeling is indescribable. It’s the best thing that’s ever happen to me and my wife, for sure. Of course I haven’t slept that much or practise that much because there are definitely more important things.
"I was also not sure if I would make it to the Europeans, depending on when the birth date would be. So I came in one day before the competition and I’m just trying to enjoy it here. I know at home I’ve got the most amazing thing waiting for me so I’m on cloud nine a little bit right now."

On how it is to focus on table tennis:
"It was hard in the last weeks, for sure. But now that I’m here I want to do the best possible. We are always facetiming, so I see him anyway, for the rest of the day. When I’m here in the hall it’s full focus and so far it’s working."
