Unit Reports

On losing his quarterfinal to Kristian Karlsson (SWE):
"He (Karlsson) played very consistently today, he was very strong from the first to the last point and deservedly won. The consistency, which I usually have in my game, was actually not really present today.
"I was up in the first set, up in the third set, but definitely didn’t play my best table tennis in those important moments. I was coming back from the fourth set, making 2-2, I was a bit in the lead in the beginning of the fifth and I started to miss some easy balls and then you won’t win such matches."

On his club teammate Karlsson:
"We practise a lot together, I think most of our encounters I’ve managed to win. I’m coming back from a very long injury and maybe those kinds of mistakes I’ve made today is a part of the progress of coming back."

On the home crowd:
"It is just an advantage, it was a big pleasure to play home and get such support from the crowd. Without the crowd I probably would’ve dropped the first game. It was a big joy."
On the key to beating former world No.1 Dimitrij Ovtcharov (GER) 4-2 in the quarterfinal:
”He’s incredibly good at getting the game the way he wants and I think I manage it good enough to get to play my own balls too. That was important.”

On what the doubles gold medal with Mattias Falck (SWE) means for his confidence:
"Of course it means a bit, I think Mattias also feels that. It is some kind of burden that has been lifted from our shoulders, at least in the first rounds of singles.
”Now it’s super fun to play semifinals and finals and quarterfinals, they’re great fun. But in the first rounds that you, in quotation marks ’should win’, you still felt a little bit less pressure on our shoulders."

On having found a high level to play at:
”It was at a high level today too. He also hits really well, we are two sluggers. It is hard to defend against. I think I and him defended really well so we got some good rallies in there."

On who he would prefer to play in the semifinal of Tiago Apolónia (POR) and Darko Jorgić (SLO):
”Let’s see. I’ve got a good friend in Darko Jorgić, who is a favourite in his quarterfinal. But at the same time it’s 50/50 in the quarterfinal. But it would’ve been slightly more fun to get to play Darko."

On the prospect of playing Jorgić in the semifinal:
”It’s even between us. He has won the last ones but I’ve won some before that. He is always fun to play, he’s got a hot temper, the Slovenian.”

On his body status on day eight of table tennis at the European championships Munich 2022:
”I’m a little bit tired. I haven’t played this many matches in so few days at any tournament, ever. Or I at least don’t remember when I did it. But we’ve gone far so it’s fun.”

On his celebrations after the match:
”It’s a lot of fun to win but there are two matches left. No exaggerated celebrations, we take that afterwards.”

On the crowds at Rudi-Sedlmayer-Halle supporting his opponent:
"It feels OK, but it almost feels like it’s my home turf too. I get quite good response from the audience. They are good sports fans, it’s been super fun."

On Ovtcharov:
"We train so much together that it’s hard to come with something completely new. We know each other so well.”

On whether he can feel that he is in a flow:
"It’s hard to say that I don’t have it. I feel that I’ve been in good shape for a long time now. I beat Wang Chuqin (CHN), one of China’s most promising players, quite recently and I think that I’ve played well for about a year. It happened for me at the (Tokyo 2020) Olympic Games basically.”
