On winning his and Kristian Karlsson's first European championships title – in their third final: |
---|
”We are really happy and really satisfied right now. We have been aiming for this title throughout the whole tournament. It was a tough final but I’m really happy the way we managed to play it. ”It’s been a tough tournament, we are world champions and we were aiming for the gold here too so I’m really happy that we managed and that we played really well throughout the tournament to win the title. On what made them beat Robert Gardos (AUT) and Daniel Habesohn (AUT): ”It’s obviously very small margins in doubles. After we lost the first set I think we found more of a calm and took more control over the match. We got better control on the first balls and could put pressure on them.” On how they surprised Gardos and Habesohn: ”We got them a little bit out of balance. We said before the game that we should try to play long balls on them. They expect me to play short to build up for Kristian every time so I tried to be a little more aggressive, playing a little longer to get them out of balance. ”Kristian defended himself really great and then it feels even more relaxed for me to be a bit more aggressive, knowing that he defends himself fantastically.” On their many match points in the fourth set: "We had our match points but they are a strong pair. We were trying to keep calm and stay focused.” On his teamwork with Karlsson: ”We know each other inside of out. I almost know what decisions he will make even before he makes it, so it feels very comfortable, we’ve played together for such a long time.” On how he will celebrate, playing in the singles tournament on Friday morning at 10:00: ”We will have to try to find a little fancier version of something, we will see what we can find.” |
On winning his and Mattias Falck's first gold medal in their third European championships final: |
”We have tried for a decade now – it is 10 years since we took silver the first time so it’s obviously a fantastic feeling.” On what made them win: ”It is difficult to say, it is such small margins in doubles, it’s all about the first three balls and I think we were really tight there and played really, really good after the first set. We also played well in the first set, obviously, but after that we took a little bit more control over the match and it felt like we came to our absolute highest level.” On the match: ”It was pretty intense, we know what their strengths are. We have played them ten times at least and they also know how we want to play. After the first set I think we managed to control the game a little bit more than they wanted and that was pretty much the key to success here.” On being world and European champions: It’s fantastic. It’s not that easy to be reigning champions in both. We are incredibly proud. I had a similar feeling as at the (2021) world championships. When we won the quarterfinal I felt a bit like ’OK, if we play this well we’ve got the chance’. Then we focused on the goal really well and executed it perfectly. On losing the first set: ”We were down 1-0 against (semifinal opponents) Jon (Persson, SWE) and Anton (Källberg, SWE) too. It swings fast as heck, it is very small things that could happen.” On what he will celebrate with: ”Pizza, definitely.” |
On what made Mattias Falck (SWE) and Kristian Karlsson (SWE) win the final: |
"They were better in the small games, in the short shots. They were a little bit more mixed in their receives and serves and I think this was the point. We couldn’t get into the ball and I think this was our biggest mistake. Normally we play good in the first two-three balls but today they were much better than us in this and that’s why I think they won." |
On his feelings after the defeat: |
"It’s always bad to lose, it doesn’t matter which match and even more in the final. But if somebody would’ve said ’OK, you will be in the final in doubles in these European championships’, we would be happy already. We did a good performance until now. The first set we stole, then we lost the system a little bit and they were in control. That was the problem – we weren’t able to adapt fast enough. That’s why it was quite fast 1-2. "They were better in the small play. They placed the ball incredibly well and kept varying and surprising us. That way they managed to control the game and we took too long to adapt to that, that is how they came away with the victory." |
