On reaching the semifinals |
---|
"The aim was to get in the semis, so that's already done. We'll keep grinning to try and concentrate on maybe the final, but to take the best spot possible." On his progression in the last year: "I finished my degree in Oxford Brookes. Over there I was training mainly in the eight with my mates - most of them are in the British team now. Swapping to training to sweep to fully training in the single helped me a lot to feel better in the single. "Now I'm training in Italy. We went to Italy and training on Varese lake in Gavirate, with Giovanni Calabrese (ITA). I feel like I'm sculling better. I'm just better technically in the single and can express myself a bit more now in the single." On what he learned from university in eights: "It definitely helped me. When I went to Brookes I was a bit fed up with the single, because I was just doing the single for so many years. Brookes really helped me to put myself mentally and to build an engine properly, and get to the races thinking to win the race. "I changed a lot mentally before and after Brookes, that definitely helped me in the single. Now training in the single I can apply what I learned in the eights to the single." On the development of Monégasque rowing: "The Monaco Olympic Committee is doing a huge job to put many Monégasques into sport. Monaco is a city where everyone is pushed towards sport. I hope many more come to rowing after. "The problem in Monaco is that we train on the sea, so it's more coastal. You have to do lots of sacrifice to go to Olympic rowing, because you have to go to a lake that is about one hour from Monaco. Commuting there every day is impossible, it's just too far." |
