On winning silver in a close race |
---|
Guillaume Krommenhoek (NED) On winning silver: "I just heard the cox screaming 'yeah we’re gonna get them (Italy), we’re almost in silver' and I was like no, I think you’re lying to us to make us feel better. But we ended up with silver, awesome." On the race and his problem early on when he got his blade caught in the water: "It was an unbelievable race. We had a strategy but it went directly overboard when I caught the crab. We ended up in lane 4 when we started in lane 5. We did some short strokes to get in lane and then did a drag race to catch up to everybody." Abe Wiersma (NED) On the crab: "Catching a crab, it's never nice, but it does happen even at this level of racing. Quite a severe one, I'd say. "We had to crawl back very inch of the race." Nicolas van Sprang (NED) On the race: "We got off pretty well. I thought OK, this is nice, going well, going well. Then there was a split second when I thought hey, we're hitting a little buoy, then it turned out to be a big buoy, then it turned out to be a crab. "I just saw an oar parallel to the boat and the boat stopped and the field was gone. I was OK, that wasn't quite the plan. "Then just had to get back into the lane and went together, and kept going. "The nice thing is you always get a bit of extra adrenalin. Usually getting back up to speed is not the problem, the question is can you keep doing it the second half of the race. It went quite well." On recovering: "We very well got back to the rhythm we talked about last night, and after the frst race two days ago which wasn't quite what we wanted. We managed to get that back and not panic, just invest in how we want to row." |

On winning bronze in a photo-finish |
"I knew the last 2,000 metres, because I was neck and neck with the number three of the German boat. And then step by step I was with the four and the five." On the Dutch rowing back through them: "I saw the crab, it was incredible because they were three or four seconds behind us. A very good race." On the importance of the eight to the squad: "We are trying this new experience in the eight. Last six seven years we came from the men's four, where we took most of the medals - the Olympic bronze, the world championship. Lots of medals. "This year after the Olympics we try to do this new experience with the eight. It is very difficult because it is completely different from the four or the pair. Here you must be strong." |

On winning gold |
Harry Brightmore (GBR) On the crowd noise: "That was pretty special. It’s the first time I’ve been to a multisport games and we were going down in the last quarter of the race and I could just hear this wall of noise from my right hand side. I was trying to shout as loud as possible so the boys could hear me, it was epic." On being one of two coxes considered for the boat: "It's obviously been quite a stressful season to try and earn my spot. And then being selected for this, like a multi-sport event, with all the crowds and everything - it's such a huge occasion." On the race: "I just remember thinking about, a minute and half into the race 'if we just keep our cool, we've got this'." Sholto Carnegie (GBR) On what more they can give: "It's enjoyable to see how far we can push it and push ourselves. It'd be boring if you just got the season's first race, perfect race and then you were like 'oh, job done'. But no, we want to keep pushing the boundaries." On selecton for the boat: "You can never have enough. You've always got more people to come in, you've always got interest to find everywhere." |
