On her third gold at Munich 2022: |
---|
“That’s great. I cannot really believe that I won today.” On the photo finish: “I didn’t immediately know that I’d won. I only knew when the crowd celebrated.” On her condition: “It’s good again. I went through all emotions today. I had not expected to win. My stomach didn’t help. I have thrown up, I cried, I thought that I was not going to make it. But then my team has picked me up so well, they gave me energy and tip and helped me a lot.” On being sick all day: “I threw up so much that I really had the feeling there was something wrong with my stomach. I couldn’t eat, did not have any power, and have just eaten gels all the time, but those came out immediately as well. I thought I did not have enough power, but in the end it somehow worked out.” On what was key to her win: “Mathilda thought she’d won when she pulled one (in the draw for who starts in front). For me it made a difference too, but I just thought I’d try it from second. Everyone wants to ride up front here. (In the third run) I knew what I’d done wrong in the second. This time I did not ride on the outside for two laps, but just the last one. That’s why I got closer.” On embracing opponent Mathilde Gros (FRA) “Mathilde is a great opponent. On the track we are the biggest rivals, but after that everything is fine. There are not so many riders to whom I would go (after the race), but she’s so nice. I wanted to congratulate here and pay due respect.” |

On winning silver |
"I gave everything. There wasn't much on the line, but that's sport. It could have gone otherwise, I could have taken another win, but there you go. There were some good things and some stuff to look at later. "The goal is Paris (2024 Olympic Games) in two years, there's also the world championships in Paris in two months. "There'll be disappointment, there'll be joy. This is a bit annoying but I'm still happy because six months ago I wouldn't have expected this." |

On winning bronze after suffering severe injuries in a Keirin crash at the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games: |
“Last year I was in hospital around this time of year. These European Championships and the upcoming World Championships were the reason to get back on the bike as fast as I could, and to set new goals. To get this medal, is a great reward." On her recovery: “I did compete at last year’s World Championships, a little short of two months after my crash, but I had not fully recovered yet. Everything still hurt, so this is actually the first major tournament that I was fit to compete." On setting new goals after the crash: “I accepted that it happened (the crash) pretty quick. It was just bad luck. The whole run-up to the (Olympic) Games was strange, a year-and-a-half without competition (due to corona lockdowns). I knew I had the Games and I had worked so hard, and I had improved so much, but I was not able to show it anywhere. "I just hoped that I could come back at the same level I had before the Games and with 10.4 (in the flying 200m qualifier on Sunday), I showed that that was the case.” On her semi-final loss versus World Champion Hinze: “It was close in the first heat, but in the second heat you could see that she’s simply stronger. “It’s a pity that (the championships) are held on a 200m track, because it’s very difficult to try something tactically, and she is just very good at going fast straight from the start.” On what she needs to beat Hinze: “I hope that I will have a better chance on a 200m track. For me it’s a big step to become faster on that 200m (flying lap) time. Now I’m going to prepare for the World Championships (in Paris in October). I hope to make another step.” On the Keirin at Munich 2022 on Tuesday: “I’ll compete and we’ll see. It’s so different on this (200m) track. I’m going to give it my all, but we’ll have to see how it pens out.” |
