On coming first in qualifying:

“The first lap Roy (teammate Roy Van den Berg) was 0.01s slower than Germany. (The split time) showed up in red shortly. Tomorrow we’ll have to make sure all three of us set the fastest lap time.

“It’s important to qualify well. If you face the number eight (in qualifying) tomorrow, a mistake is easily made.”

On the team lineup:

“It was the first time (since the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games last year) that Roy, myself and Jeffrey (teammates Roy van den Berg and Jeffrey Hoogland) raced together again, so that was important for me. It’s the only time we will race together in the run-up to the World Championships (in Paris in October).”

On riding a 200m track instead of the usual 250m track:

“I was pretty nervous beforehand, because it’s really something different (riding on a 200m instead of the usual 250m track), change-ups could have been difficult, I was curious how it would go and it went pretty well actually.

“It’s great to have a championships with all the sports combined, that makes up for a great event, but for our sport it’s a disadvantage.”

On his decision to skip the individual events (because of the different track routine):

“We clearly made our decision, we’re not going to ride the individual events, simple as that. In the Team Events we do compete and we will give it a hundred percent.”
