On being runner-up at the European Championships: |

“It sounds great. It’s a little surprise for me.” On getting back after corona: "My last international race is already a while ago. I had trouble with corona in the beginning of this year, and had to skip a lot of races. Therefore it was hard to estimate where I stood. I prepared in Italy on a 400m concrete track, therefore this (200m) lap felt very short for me.” On race tactics: “I knew that in the sprint it would be difficult and I had to put all my eggs in one basket. It was a super tough race and I was already tired, but I knew, the others are tired too. Then I took a chance and give it my all.” On choosing the moment to attack: “You wait until the race is really tough. I was completely exhausted myself. You can barely push the pedals anymore, and when you’re the one to attack and the others have to react… it’s always more difficult than to take the initiative. |

On having to settle for bronze: |
“I’ve never won a European title, so I really want to have such a (the championships) jersey. But I think the (200m instead of 250m) track was not to my advantage, because it’s easier to get a lap (ahead of the pack). I’m one of the fastest in the pack, so I’d rather see that it’s more difficult to get away.” On what to do against the escape of winner Jüri Leitão (POR): “Jump to his wheel straight away. I had just tried to escape myself. He was the next to try and they did let him go. The second lap (Leitão eventually got two laps ahead of the pack), was a present because all the others were fighting for silver. “But that first lap was very strong. He has already won a European title like in that fashion before. You know that he’s able to do it, but it’s still a pity that he actually does it.” |

On race tactics: |
“I waited, but when I saw the opportunity I did my best.” On his preparations for Munich 2022 after the Tour of Poland: “I had only one day to rest at home with my girlfriend, then I trained and I felt good.” |
