On winning gold

"I didn't expect this. I didn't start the day well, I was sixth in scratch.

"The tempo was a difficult race. There were lots of difficulties to manage, it was a bit long. After that, the elimination race was a bit better, I managed to win it, and knew I was still in the game.

"Just before the points race it was really close. I needed 14 points to win."

On the points race:
"I said to myself I'd start by picking up little easy points, and rise steadily up the rankings. I kept looking at the (score) board from time to time, and the last time I looked at the board I was third.

"I thought I was fighting just for a medal - second or third.

"Before the last sprint I thought I might as well give it everything. I had to win the last sprint to get the best place possible. I saw the Spaniard (Sebastian Mora Vedri) pass in front of me. I thought I had to catch his wheel and then give everything. I managed to pass him.

"On the sprint I thought of my grandfather, who died a year and a month ago today. I was really thinking of him today."

On becoming European champion:
"It was the only jersey I was missing. So obviously I had to do everything possible to win a medal or pick up the jersey."
