Event Reports

On her race:
“I had no idea how I managed to win.

“I was not properly trained. (Ruesser suffered a concussion in the Tour de France Femmes only three weeks ago)

“Today I did not have the best legs

“It was 110 percent bike and 90 percent me.”

On successfully defending her title:

“The success is so special, since I have had the feeling before I will not win

On her new bike:

“It’s a Specialized from team SD Worx, and my engineer James worked all weekend so the cockpit was very fast.”

On her radio not working:

“My coach did great work. My radio did not work, I had all the time a beep … But this was good, since I could imagine what they would say.”

On the medal:

“It has a strange shape (triangle), which fits quite well to my strange win today.”
On her performance:
“The race was disappointing. It was not my day.

“But what I really want to say: The atmosphere was gigantic. It gave me goose bumps.

On the home crowd:

“The legs did not cooperate. But the crowed carried me over the course.”

On her retirement after Sunday’s road race:

“I will now take a deep breath before my very last race. I don't want to just end it with that. We have big plans for Sunday."
On winning bronze:
“I’m very happy to become third. Last year I was fifth and last year we started to work on the time trial together with the team and we set a goal to be at the podium here at the Euros and to reach that goal makes me really happy and proud.

“Of course you always want to be closer to place two and one, but I think this is a very good start.”

On her race:

"Was super difficult especially with the heat"

On being on the hot seat:

“Actually after a time trial, you always think: where could I have been faster, but no, it was really nice to be in the hot seat for so long and quite nervous of course.”
On winning silver:
“The target is high of course. You only want to win, but Marlen is just a super strong opponent. She won here (the European Championships in Trentino last year) with a twenty-second gap. I know we are always close and it’s great to have another battle here, but it’s just a pity that I lose of course. However, I really love to do races like these.

“I came here to win of course, so that silver medal is not going to get a special place, I’ll just throw it some place far away. But anyway, I am very happy to fight this battle here. I have to swallow the loss, but I’ve not been crushed here. I’m close and in four weeks (at the World Championships) it can be the other way around.”

On her race:

“I kind of had a feeling…I never want to know intermediate times, so I never knew what the time gap was, but in the end I just came short and Marlen was just too strong.”

On comparing smashing the world hour record on the track (last May) and time trials on the road:

“Of course there are a lot of things similar, but also a lot of things different. It’s also pacing, but (in the hour record attempt) you never have one second of recovery and here (in a time trial on the road) you have places where you have to push harder and places where you can recover a little bit, so it has different intensities.”
On her race:
“I am not really satisfied with my race, unfortunately the approach was not the best. I crashed four days ago in Norway, which affected me a bit. Personally I was expecting a bit more, but I'm looking ahead and will still try to work on this test which I like and improve day by day.”

On the course:

“I have to say that the course was quite demanding, with a climb right at the start and some ups and downs. Personally, I never managed to find the right rhythm that would have allowed me to have the right speed and power that I would have liked, but it was a really nice course today.”
On her performance:
“I'm happy, I tried as always to give everything, even though I know that I would still have had to compete against athletes of great calibre, but for now I'm already satisfied to be here and to have given everything.”

On the course:

“Definitely the course was very demanding and very beautiful, I think also spectacular for the public.”

On gaining experience:

“It is a fantastic experience for me and a great opportunity. I hope it will be useful to me in the future, it is definitely a starting point from which I will try to learn as much as possible.”
On the course:
“I found the course insanely hard, but also very beautiful at the same time. We trained it several times.”

On her race:

“I went into the red zone right after the first climb. I then tried to make myself as small as possible so that I would have to pedal as little as possible.”

On her result:

“I am very satisfied with 5th place in this competition.”
On her race:
“After the first quarter of an hour, the body has switched to red alert. At some point I no longer looked at the wattage, the values were a disaster.”

On recovering from Covid:

“Covid hit me before, although I had been vaccinated three times. I had severe cold symptoms for ten days.”

On the retirement of team mate Lisa Brennauer:

“I will miss Lisa for the advice and support she gave us and for sharing her experience with us. We all learned a lot from her and she showed a lot of empathy towards all of us.”
