“I knew it was going to be close. I was feeling really good. I had a really difficult one-and-a-half months behind me, due to my covid-infection I was really struggling. I was a little bit optimistic for this race because I had better feelings in training. In the race, I was feeling good, I was able push on the whole time. “The only problem was the radio did not work the whole time so I had no idea where I was sitting. I just tried to go full gas.” On losing gold by a 0.3 second margin: “I’m not going to swear here in front of television, but you can imagine I wasn’t happy. Exactly one year ago I missed out on an Olympic medal by more or less the same gap. So it’s really frustrating. I’m happy for Stefan, he deserves it, but to lose by such a close margin hurts even more than if you get beaten by a bigger margin.” On the secret of Swiss time trialling: “We have really good support form the federation. They support us all the way, starting with the juniors and they always keep track on us. We can ask them for their expertise. This continuation helps a lot to stay on the top. With Stefan (Bissegger) it helps a lot, we’re almost neighbours. We live three kilometres apart, I guess maybe the air that we breathe is quite good.” |

“It didn't go so well for me, because the radio failed about halfway through. That's why I had to lift my head to see where I was going and I couldn't ride in the best position for the wind. I lost a few seconds there. But that’s better than riding against a traffic Island. We have to analyse why this happened.” On the course: “I absolutely loved the track. It's always hard to ride a mountain right at the beginning. You have to manage your power optimally. This was hard for me because I could hear the great crowd cheering me on.” On Munich 2022: “I think it's extremely good that so many sports are under one roof at the European Championships. All sports benefit a lot from that. Tomorrow I’m going to see athletics.” On home advantage: “We used the home advantage and arrived on Monday. So we were able to test drive the route a few times. This morning we also had so much time that we drove it again. So that the organism doesn't run down.” On the home crowd: “I heard my name everywhere on the circuit. That was great. My mum was also there. She cheered me on at the start and finish. “It's amazing to be able to compete here in front of this backdrop.” |

“I did the values that I had to, the last race I did was the Tour (de France) and from there I practically never touched the bike again.” On competing in the Munich 2022 time trial: “I sure arrived in the last moment because there was an injury (Matteo Sobrero ) and the national team trust me for this race. I’m really happy to represent them. I’m really happy to take this medal. “it's an extra test ahead of the world championships, so it went well, maybe I suffered a little bit in the final.” On his goal at the World Championships: “For sure to win this jersey again, but it’s really hard, a really technical race, but I’ll do my best to arrive in good shape and try to win.” On why he postponed his world hour record attempt: “Because I didn't know how I would come out of the Tour and I was also quite tired. It was better that way and now we'll see with the team to reschedule it as soon as possible. “At the moment I’ll stay with the team. We’ll have to do races in a few days and then we will see.” |
On watching team mate Stefan Küng (SUI) finishing 0.3 seconds short of gold: |
“My heartrate went up again, like in the race, but I’m so very happy that finally it worked out for me." On his season so far: “I had a lot of bad luck this season with two crashed in the tour and with a lot of sickness in the beginning of the year. I’m very happy that it finally worked out and (I’m) really motivated for the rest of the season.” On the secret of Swiss time trialling: “They call us the Swiss watches, because we’re always on time and time is everything in the time trial. That’s really our specialty.” |
